Mga Pahiwatig ng Isang Pintor.

September 10 - October 10, 2026

Two in the morning is an hour of silence. Or, at least, it is supposed to be. By then, the noise of the day had calmed. The world has closed, leaving us alone with our own thoughts. It is in this hour that the mind begins to wander towards memories we thought we had forgotten, stories that return without warning, toward people who remain somewhere between what was said and what was left unsaid. Sometimes, an ache we cannot quite name. At two in the morning, sometimes, there is nowhere else to look but inward.

It is from these moments that Mga Pahiwatig ng Isang Pintor begins. Across seven oil paintings, the artist Mark Andy Garcia enters the uncertain terrain of vulnerability, maybe even subtle confession. His paintings hold what remains after an experience, such as a residue of memory and traces of a past relationship. Rather than painting particular stories, they allow the mind to linger and become something else.

The titles themselves read like thoughts. In “Kapag Alas-Dos na ng Madaling Araw,” the hour that begins this exhibition becomes a state of mind, a moment when the quiet outside makes the inner world louder. “Gunita” brings us toward memory, where the past does not necessarily remain behind us. In “Nakasulat sa mga Dahon,” something is written, yet perhaps not in a language meant to be completely understood. There is something intimate in a message held lightly, something that reveals itself only when we look closely.

Then there is “Ikaw.” A single word, a direct address. Someone is being spoken to. Or perhaps someone is being remembered. The presence of the other enters the space of the paintings, reminding us that even our most private thoughts are often shaped by those who have touched our lives.

Within these works, the familiar starts to feel unfamiliar. Forms shift, images appear and disappear, and things that seem recognizable can slowly become distorted. At times, something quite abstract can suddenly feel very personal. The painting becomes less about representing something and more about creating a space where something can be felt.

Perhaps this is what it means to look inside: not necessarily to find an answer, but to stay long enough with what is there. Garcia’s paintings inhabit this space between speaking and listening, between what is revealed and what remains unsaid. They do not insist on a single narrative. They leave room for the viewer to enter with their own memories, histories, and silences. What begins with the artist can return to us as something deeply personal.

There is also restraint in Garcia’s narrative that has developed over time. Since his first solo exhibition in 2008, his paintings have gradually moved away from the need to tell everything. There is less urgency to explain, less certainty in the image. What remains unresolved is allowed to remain so. The painting does not have to give itself away completely.

Perhaps this is why the night matters for Garcia. Night is not simply a time of day, but a state of being. It is a time in which we become more available to ourselves and, at the same time, more exposed. Mga Pahiwatig ng Isang Pintor is therefore a pahiwatig. It is also an opening outward, toward memory, toward another person, toward uncertainty, and toward the possibility of being changed by what we encounter.

At two in the morning, when thoughts come without asking, when memories return, and feelings become difficult to put into words, we are left with the things that stay. The paintings stay in that hour.
